Asanas in Ramamani Iyengar A must-visit place for any serious yoga practitioner, the institute is run by the indefatigable, 90-year-old grand old man of Indian yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar, and his children. The Iyengar school emphasizes in-depth study of asanas (anatomically correct postures) and pranayama (breathing). It teaches students to adapt and modify their exercise routine depending on the environment.

Situated in Pune, 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Mumbai, the institute caters to advanced students of yoga. So before packing your mat and heading for India, learn the basics from a certified Iyengar teacher in your country.

Sage Patanjali, who has penned this subject in his treatise Yoga Darshana defines yoga as chitta vritti nirodha. Chitta is the consciousness which includes the mind, the intellect and the ego. Yoga is a method of silencing the vibrations of the chitta.

The eight aspects (astanga) of yoga are :

His style of teaching yoga is called "Iyengar Yoga" and is now being followed by certified teachers across the world.

Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute is the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga and is located in Pune, Maharashtra. The institute was established on January 19, 1975 and is dedicated to Smt. Ramamani Iyengar, the wife of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar. Its directors are Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta S. Iyengar and Prashant S. Iyengar. The students from all over the world come here to receive the essence of yoga and learn the values of life.

There is a great significance behind the unique design of RIMYI. The three floors represent the body, mind and soul. It's height is 71 feet and has 8 columns which represent the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga i.e.yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi.

The bust of Smt. Ramamani at the gate welcomes the visitor while that of Guruji is present in the entrance hall. Guruji's bust has been chiseled by the Queen Mother of Belgium at the age of 81 joyous at accomplishing her life's dream of performing Sirsasana.

The institute is filled with numerous awards, citations, presentations, offerings and works of art presented to Guruji. The library has 8000 titles in several languages on a variety of subjects ranging from philosophy, human anatomy and physiology, ayurveda, commentaries on the scriptures, modern medicine and of course yoga.

Classes at RIMYI:
Yoga Classes at RIMYI The Institute conducts regular classes for all. These include beginners, general and advanced classes.
» The Institute also conducts special classes for ladies, children and individuals having medical problems.
» The classes at the Institute are conducted by Smt. Geeta S. Iyengar, Sri Prashant S. Iyengar or senior teachers trained by Yogacharya B.K.S Iyengar.

Overseas Students :
RIMYI welcomes Iyengar Yoga practitioners all over the world for general and ladies classes . Note : The classes are generally booked a year or two in advance.

The student should be practicing "Iyengar Yoga" for at least 8 years. This should include regular practice of 'inverted postures" such as Sirsasana, Sarvangasana for 8-10 minutes.
All students should have read, the introductory chapter to "Light on Yoga" and be familiar with the terms and principles covered in that chapter.
We expect women to know what is to be practiced during menstruation.
